First Coast Pickleball

Team League Overview

League Overview

What We Are

First Coast Pickleball is a team-based league where teams will play against other teams in pre-determined matches over the course of a season. We are calling our format: Flex Team Doubles.

Flex Team Doubles is a pickleball format that sees teams play against other teams in their respective divisions, every week, for the duration of a season in a series of Home and Away matches that will culminate in a Champion being named after playoffs. The Flex part is related to the scheduling of matches, where the weekly pre-determined matches must be played by the end of the established week, but there is no set date or time (So, teams could schedule the match for Thursday night or Saturday morning, whichever will best fit their schedules).

Teams

Teams will consist of the bare minimum amount of players that it would take to play all lines or more. If a team will field 3 lines for the season, 6 players minimum would be required. It is highly advised that teams have extra players available to account for unavailability or injuries of players.

We are aiming for teams to have at least 3 lines to play, however, and determined by participation, some divisions may have 4-5 lines if participation is particularly plentiful (will still be the same amount of playtime per player). On the opposite end of that spectrum, if there are plentiful teams, but a lack of players per team, we will reach out to all players and propose one of our alternate formats that is very similar and will still net the same amount of play time.

Matches & Scheduling

At the start of each season, the team captains will be given a schedule with each team they are to play every week, by the week’s end. There will be an opportunity to make-up matches at the end of the regular season, right before the playoffs are announced.

Each team will have 3-5 lines of play that will match against their opponents 3-5 lines of play. Your first line (Line 1) will be your strongest players, and your last line (Line 3-5) will be your weakest players.

Divisions consist of:  Men’s, Women’s, & Mixed teams;  Seniors and Adults; 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, etc.

Mixed will only play Mixed, Seniors only Seniors, and same skill levels play same skill levels.

More on Scheduling

Captain’s will communicate with each and decide on the best time to play the match in advance. One team will be designated as Home and one as Away. The Home team will use their facility for their Home match.

Season Length

Each team will play Home and Away matches. The exact amount of regular season matches will vary depending on the amount of teams in each division. Our goal is to give you the most pickleball for your dollar, so if there is low participation in one division, we may look to merge two divisions (and we will make it fair), we may use the make-up or playoff dates to extend your play. We have ways to get you out there and playing!

Scoring

We are very seriously considering changing this to allow for more/longer gameplay, as some insightful feedback has been received – we will likely poll our players for the ultimate decision.

Each game will be played to 11 points, win by 2. Matches are the best two out of three games. If a third game must be played to determine the winner, that game is played to 5 points, win by 2.

In the example: Home won Game 1 and Away won Game 2, so they will need to play Game 3 to determine the winner. Game 3 is played to 5, win by 2.

Match time estimates will range between 30 minutes up to 90 minutes, depending on how closely players are matched in skill level.
